Happy new year! It's that time again, resolutions for the new year. A lot of us want to start exercising to lose weight and to be healthy. It's great to start an exercising program, but it can be a bummer if your feet start to hurt.
Make sure you get gym shoes with good arch support. Look at the side of the shoe and examine the arch - does it have an arch? Then try to bend the arch - can you bend it? If you can fold the shoe so the arch collapses and the heel and toe touch each other, it doesn't have enough support. It may not be a problem for some people, but it can cause heel or arch pain in others.
If your foot is hurting, then you won't want to exercise. So, make sure you have the right shoes. I like Asics, Brooks, and New Balance shoes, but even among those brands, I would do the "bend test." Some people may need more support than the shoe offers and they might need a custom orthotic. Check out our website for more information on orthotics. Many insurance plans do cover them so call our office and we can check for you.
