Why a Foot Massage is More Than Just a Luxury

We often think of massages as an occasional treat; more of a way of pampering ourselves than anything else. But a good massage can have all sorts of positive effects on the body beyond relaxation. 

What are the benefits of a foot massage?

1. A good foot massage provides an opportunity to inspect your feet for potential problems, such as corns, bunions, and ingrown nails. If you can identify any of these problems early on, you'll have a better opportunity to take care of them before they become a problem.

2. A foot massage can help improve circulation, reduce tension, ease pain, and stimulate the muscles in the feet. You spend the whole day walking and standing on your feet, which causes a small amount of swelling. A good massage helps to ease the swelling and relieve some of the pain of everyday wear and tear on your feet. 

3. Massage therapy has been shown to increase blood flow in the legs, and has even been found to speed up the healing of diabetic foot ulcers.

How to Massage Your Feet at Home

For a light massage, lather your hands with a bit of lotion and use both hands to massage from the inside of the bottom of your foot moving outward. Massage up and around your toes, making your way up your calf muscles for a light lower leg massage. Gently pull your toes back and forth, stretching the muscles underneath. 

For a deeper massage, use your knuckles to knead your feet as if you were kneading bread. 

While a good massage can seem like a true luxury, you don't necessarily need to make an appointment for a professional massage, just take a few minutes everyday at home to care for your feet!
