Our Podiatrist in Niles & Berwyn, IL area can help you with your bunions or hammertoes
A bunion is an enlargement of the the joint at the base of the big toe. This painful bump is caused by pressure on the big toe joint, causing the big toe to bend towards the second toe, gradually resulting in a change in the bone structure. The skin around the join becomes sore and painful, and can develop into persistent pain.
Risk Factors for Bunions:
- Wearing high heels or ill-fitting shoes - heels and shoes that are too small put pressure on the toes
- Rheumatoid arthritis - arthritis is an inflammatory condition that affects the joints, which can make you more susceptible to bunions.
- Heredity - bunions can form due to inherited structural foot defects.
Conservative treatments for bunions include wearing shoes that provide more room for the toes; padding or taping the foot into a normal position; medications or injections to control bunion pain; shoe inserts that help to redistribute pressure on your feet; and icing the inflamed area. If conservative treatments don't work, surgical options can remove the swollen tissue around the affected area, straighten the toe, realign the bone, or permanently join the bones of the affected joints.

Hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third, fourth or fifth toes. In this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, resembling a hammer. Left untreated, hammertoes can become inflexible and require surgery.
People with hammertoe may have corns or calluses on the top of the middle joint of the toe or on the tip of the toe. They may also feel pain in their toes or feet and have difficulty finding comfortable shoes.
Causes of hammertoe include:
- improperly fitting shoes
- muscle imbalance
Treatment for the condition typically involves shoes with soft, roomy toe boxes and toe exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles. Commercially available straps, cushions or non-medicated corn pads may also relieve symptoms.
