LASER FOR TOENAIL FUNGUS

Toenail fungus is an infection of the nail that enters through cracks in your mails or cuts in the skin around the nail. This can cause discoloration and/or thickening of the nail. The infection can cause the nail to separate from the nail bed. Left untreated, it can spread to other nails as well as the skin surrounding the nails. Athletes, especially those that spend a lot of time in water, people with diabetes, athlete's foot, weak immune systems, or who smoke, are all at higher risk for toenail fungus.

Treatment of toenail fungus depends on the type and severity of the infection, and often includes:

  • Laser therapy for fungal toenails
  • Applying a topical cream or lacquer directly to the nail
  • Taking an antifungal oral medication
  • Removing the damaged area of nail/skin.
  • In severe cases, the nail may need to be surgically removed.

The best ways to keep toenails from becoming infected is to keep the feet clean and dry, change your socks regularly, wear shoes with plenty of ventilation, and wear shower shoes in public places like locker rooms, swimming pools, and showers.

INGROWN TOENAILS

An ingrown nail, often seen in the big toenail, is a condition caused by pressure from ingrowth of the edge of the nail into the skin surrounding the toe. This pressure eventually causes the nail to break the skin, which can results in bacterial or fungal infections and inflammation.

Risk Factors for ingrown toenails:

  • Trauma to the nail/toes
  • Ill-fitting shoes
  • Fungal Infection
  • Improper nail trimming

Treatment options for ingrown nails include:

  1. Lifting the nail - lifting the nail edge and placing cotton or other sterile fabric between the nail and the skin to help guide the nail towards growing away from the skin edge.
  2. Partially removing the nail - for more extreme cases, trimming or removing a portion of the nail to keep it from growing into the skin around the nail.
  3. Removing the nail and surrounding tissue - for repeat problems on the same toe, a portion of the nail along with ten nail bed may be removed to keep the nail from growing back.

Always seek medical attention for any type of nail pain. Contact Dr. Parikh for a medical consultation.
